James, you are absolutely spot on. What many overlook, or are simply unaware of is the fact that the Old Testament records over six different gender designations. These designations were taught and codified in both the Talmud and Mishnah and need to be brought to a fuller light. For example, if Christians take the Old Testament as a precursor to Jesus, they also accept that Jesus was a recognized Rabbi. As such he knew of the six gender delineations, and even gave voice and support to trans people in Matthew 19, the English translation of eunuch comes from the Hebrew word for trans female, but of course that is not what the KJV, ESV, NIV, or NRSV have translated. Even more from pre-Jesus, and post exile, the Jewish people were called via Isaiah’s writings to welcome and affirm the non-binary, and trans individuals back home and into the community. So yes, you are right, the writers even in ancient times were well aware of gender variance, Esther is saved by a gender variant individual, and a sexually fluid King. Thanks for reading and responding!
