Today I just want to say I am thankful for the work of Richard Rohr. He as a Christian and has continued to push for total LGBTQIA acceptance and this week the meditations he writes have been focused on once again reminding Christians the tenet of our faiths is not a gender binary, but a unique image. He writes in his meditation

Both sex and gender are “fluid concepts that exist along a spectrum, rather than as fixed binaries determined by biology or genetic imprinting.” [3] In spiritual terms, gender is an attribute of the “false” or passing self, and is thus not one’s essential identity in God.

Rohr does not state that gender does not matter, but rather from God’s perspective is not a defining aspect of who we are. Yes we have a gender, but we are created by a God that in the Bible is identified with motherly traits, and fatherly traits. The very son of God, Jesus, is portrayed in the Old Testament as Lady Wisdom, and than the Son in the NT. The Bible also welcomes and affirms the life of “eunuchs” which was a broad spectrum term that encompassed gender non-binary, trans and other LGBT people.

The point Rohr makes is this,

The Gospel says I am a precious, beautiful being created in God’s image and likeness — and we all share this identity equally and in common. This totally levels the playing field of humanity. This is why I cannot give up on Christianity.

The final point for the Church to take away is stop legislating what is not even a tenet of our faith. God has leveled the playing field as Rohr writes. That means we are share in humanity, and the queer perspective we in the transgender community contribute is holy and blessed.

That is what I am focused on, our unique, uncommon, individuality.
