Trans Day of Remembrance 2021
It is another year remembering the precious lives of trans siblings we have lost to murder. Unfortunately for eleven straight years the total number of my siblings slain unjustly has risen in the US and has risen 7 out of the last 11 years internationally. Across the globe 375 reported murders of trans people have occurred, and in the US 46 trans people were murdered. In my home state of North Carolina we lost 2 trans people in Charlotte. These numbers just include the reports where family, or police have correctly gendered the person. In real life the numbers are much higher.
According to Transgender Europe (TGEU) that has monitored the horrific murder of trans people internationally for years this year marks a 7% rise in violence against our community. For trans people anywhere this is not a surprise. It is almost as if the world is especially targeting us.
